A Christmas Barring Out

"A Christmas Barring Out" opens on Christmas Eve as three children — Bobby, Alice, and Pink — settle by the fire while Grandma reads from the Bible, then shares a memory from her own schooldays. She recalls the old pioneer tradition of "barring out," where pupils locked their teacher out until he promised a Christmas candy treat. When their skeptical teacher Mr. Hazen refuses to sign, tension mounts as the fire dies low and younger children cry — until a careless mistake on a hastily written paper threatens to ruin Christmas entirely.
