Little Cosette

Little Cosette tells the story of a small, ragged girl forced to work as a servant in a busy French inn, sent alone into the dark and cold on Christmas Eve to fetch water from a distant spring. While the innkeeper's daughters play happily with dolls and kittens, Cosette hauls a bucket nearly as large as herself through the winter night. When a mysterious kind stranger takes the heavy bucket from her freezing hands, he hears her quiet account of a life without play, without warmth, and without love — and makes her a gift she cannot believe is really hers.
