The Thunder Oak

"The Thunder Oak" tells the legend of how the Christmas tree came to be. Deep in the ancient Northland, a towering oak serves as Thor's altar, where heathen priests perform grim sacrificial rites on a winter's night. When Saint Winifred strides from the dark forest wielding a shining axe, he fells the dread tree — and in its place stands a young fir, untouched. What the saint says next transforms the crowd's terror into joy and reshapes how an entire people will celebrate their holy season.
