The Sprig of Holly

"The Sprig of Holly" is a Christmas short story in which Colin and his little sister Dora search the woods for the last remaining sprig of holly. They encounter a mischievous dwarf who tries to trade it for years, months, days, and finally seconds of Colin's freedom. With each offer, Colin refuses — unsure what the dwarf might demand of him. When the dwarf finally offers the holly for nothing, Colin accepts, earning not just the prized decoration but his father's deep respect for keeping his head.
