Maria-of-the-Forest is a fairy tale about a king who will do anything to defy a prophecy that a charcoal burner's newborn daughter is his destined bride. Twice he orders the infant destroyed, and twice she survives — first cradled in a hollow tree, then cast into the sea in a locked box — each time finding new protectors who cherish her. Years later, now a graceful young woman raised in a royal palace, Maria catches the king's eye at a wedding feast, and he finds himself unable to resist the pull of the very fate he spent years trying to outrun.
