Clever Gretel

Clever Gretel is a free short story by the Brothers Grimm following Gretel, a cook with a talent for justifying her own mischief. When her master asks her to roast two chickens for an arriving guest, Gretel's thirst and appetite get the better of her — and then her quick wits kick in. With both chickens eaten and her master returning, she spins a panicked lie that sends the innocent guest fleeing into the night, convinced he's about to lose his ears to a knife-wielding host.
