The bird with nine heads

"The Bird with Nine Heads" is a short story retold by Richard Wilhelm, following a courageous young man who witnesses a monstrous nine-headed bird snatch a princess and carry her to an unreachable cave. Abandoned underground after slaying the creature, the young man must find his own way home — forging an unlikely brotherhood with a dragon's son and wielding magical pearls to survive. Back in the city, a false hero claims the princess, but two halves of a broken pin hold the truth.
