The Twelve Months

"The Twelve Months" is a fairy tale short story in which Marushka, a kind and beautiful stepdaughter, is repeatedly sent into the frozen wilderness by her cruel stepmother and vain stepsister Holena — first to find violets, then strawberries, then apples, all in the depths of winter. Each impossible errand leads her to a mountaintop fire where the Twelve Months sit in council. Her gentleness earns their help, but when Holena decides to seek the magic fire herself, her contempt and cruelty meet a very different fate.
