The history of the young King of the Black Islands

"The Young King of the Black Islands" is a short story rooted in the Arabian Nights tradition, in which a cursed prince recounts how his queen — a powerful sorceress — drugged him nightly to meet her secret lover, then transformed him into living stone when he discovered the truth. Half-flesh, half-marble, he endures daily whippings while his entire kingdom lies submerged beneath a lake. When a traveling sultan hears his tale, a dangerous plan takes shape — one that depends on the sorceress believing her bedridden lover has finally woken from his long silence.
