The Flute

"The Flute" is a haunting Japanese short story set in ancient Yedo, following a widowed father and his devoted daughter O'Yoné — a girl as slender and straight as bamboo who carries her grief silently while her father moves on. When business calls him to distant Kyoto, O'Yoné carves a bamboo flute by hand and presses it into his sleeve as a farewell gift. Months pass, and the father grows comfortable in Kyoto — until one evening the flute speaks. What it tells him sends him running through the night, half-mad with dread.
