The King’s Servant

"The King's Servant" is a fairy tale short story about Muccio, a loyal servant so beloved by his king that his jealous colleagues secretly hire a witch to destroy him — transforming him first into a black cat, then a lion, then a terrifying dragon. With each change, Muccio's devotion to the king remains unbroken, yet the servants grow increasingly desperate. When the king finally senses dark magic at work, he turns to the same witch for answers, setting in motion a reckoning that will reveal just how far envy can drive ordinary people.
