Queen Crane

"Queen Crane" is a free short story about Sheep-Peter, a humble shepherd boy who secretly becomes a battlefield hero with the help of a magical crane. Three times he rides to war in disguised armor, three times he slays the enemy — and three times he returns to his swamp, pretending to be the village fool. When the king's daughters are threatened by mer-women, Peter fights alone while noblemen flee into trees. Yet a false count and courtier steal his glory. With stolen credit, hidden handkerchiefs, and golden apples as proof, Peter must finally reveal the truth.
