The Top and Ball

"The Top and Ball" is a short story by Hans Christian Andersen about a spinning top who falls in love with a proud leather ball living in the same toy box. When the ball rejects his proposal, dismissing him in favour of a swallow, the top's longing only deepens with time. Years pass, both toys meet strange fates, and when chance finally brings them together again, what remains of that old love is far more revealing than any happy reunion could be.
