Mr. Vinegar

"Mr. Vinegar" is a free short story by Joseph Jacobs following a hapless couple who lose their home — a vinegar bottle — and stumble upon a small fortune. Armed with forty golden guineas, Mr. Vinegar heads to the fair with one simple task, but his eye is easily turned. Cow becomes bagpipes, bagpipes become gloves, and gloves become a walking stick, each trade worse than the last. A sharp-tongued parrot delivers a devastating verdict, and Mrs. Vinegar ensures her husband feels every word of it.
