Cap O’ Rushes

Cap O' Rushes is a free short story that follows a wealthy man's youngest daughter, cast out after she says she loves her father "as fresh meat loves salt." Disguised beneath a cloak of rushes, she takes work as a kitchen maid in a grand house — until a series of dances, a lovestruck young master, and a ring slipped into a bowl of gruel set a remarkable reunion in motion. Sharp, tender, and quietly subversive, the story builds toward a wedding feast where unsalted food brings a father to tears.
