The Brownie Of The Lake

The Brownie of the Lake is a short story set in rural France, where a kind farmhand named Jégu earns the loyalty of a magical dwarf after freeing a trapped bird. The brownie uses his powers to make Barbaïk — a vain and beautiful farmer's daughter — believe that marrying the awkward Jégu will mean a life of effortless comfort. When the truth is revealed after the wedding, Barbaïk's resentment festers into cruelty, and the consequences arrive swiftly. The story builds with dark humour and genuine tension toward its bitter, inevitable conclusion.
