A French Puck

"A French Puck" is a short story by Andrew Lang about a mischievous spirit haunting the mountain pastures of central France, capable of transforming into almost anything — man, beast, or object — except a convincing needle. Night after night, the creature torments cowboys and shepherds with clattering chains and tangled manes. But his most cunning prank targets a young couple on the eve of their wedding, when a mysteriously well-matched ball of thread appears by the roadside — and a dressmaker's finest work unravels at the worst possible moment.
