How Brave Walter Hunted Wolves

"How Brave Walter Hunted Wolves" is a short story about six-year-old Walter, who loudly boasts he could take on four wolves at once — until a real hunt is proposed. Armed with a dented drum, a tin sabre, and a burnt-cork moustache, Walter ventures alone into the woods toward a kiln where wolves have killed a ram. The closer he gets, the more his courage crumbles. When a shaggy creature bursts from the shadows and gives chase, Walter's bravado collapses entirely — and what follows is both mortifying and warmly comic.
