Under the Willow Tree

"Under the Willow Tree" is a short story by Hans Christian Andersen following Knud and Joanna, childhood friends who grow up sharing games, songs, and a beloved willow tree. When Joanna leaves for Copenhagen and her singing career takes her to the stages of Europe, Knud carries his unspoken love across borders and winters, unable to forget her. Haunted by a gingerbread tale about silent love that leads to ruin, Knud vows to speak — but fate and Joanna's ambitions may have already decided his story.
