The Story of the Three Beggars

The Story of the Three Beggars is a short story in which a cold-hearted merchant named Mark overhears a prophecy that a newborn boy called Vassili will one day inherit his wealth. Determined to cheat fate, Mark attempts to destroy the child not once but twice — only to watch him survive, thrive, and return. As Vassili journeys to the Snake King on a dangerous errand, he carries questions from a rotten oak, a weary ferryman, and a suffering whale — each answer quietly shaping his destiny and Mark's ruin.
