The Daisy

The Daisy is a short story by Hans Christian Andersen following a small wildflower growing beside a roadside ditch, content in the sunshine while proud tulips and peonies tower nearby in a garden. When a cheerful lark singles out the little daisy for its sweetness, the flower experiences pure joy — until the same bird is captured and caged. Placed inside with a patch of grass to comfort the imprisoned lark, the daisy watches helplessly as the bird grows desperate for water and freedom, unable to offer anything but its quiet presence.
