The Legend of Stingy Jack

The Legend of Stingy Jack tells the Irish folk tale of Jack, a cunning and notoriously tight-fisted man who twice traps the Devil himself — once using a silver cross hidden in his pocket, and once with carvings on an apple tree. Each trick buys Jack another reprieve, but his cleverness can't save him forever. When death finally comes, neither Heaven nor Hell will take him, and the Devil sends him wandering the darkness with only a carved turnip and a glowing coal to light his way.
