Winter’s Herald

"Winter's Herald" by Jane Andrews unfolds on a single autumn night when frost — Winter's silent messenger — moves through a sleeping village, whispering warnings to birch trees, muskrats, field mice, and flower gardens. Tender heliotropes blacken and wither before dawn, while sturdy maples shed their leaves with defiant calm. As farmers, gardeners, and mothers read the frost's message and begin to prepare, the story turns its gaze to old Margaret, barefoot children, and a husband sick with fever — asking quietly whether neighbours will help her send back just as brave an answer.
