The Maker of Rainbows

"The Maker of Rainbows" is a short story set in the bleak November of Twelve-Trees, a poverty-stricken village where hungry children cry and even the dogs seem defeated by hardship. When a peculiar old man arrives with a spinning wheel and a pocketful of hope, he transforms a child's tear into a cascade of colour, reveals the lost beauty in a woman the village has long mocked, and makes bare fields shimmer gold — yet the adults only perk up when he mentions a pot of gold waiting at a rainbow's end.
