The Wasp and the Cricket

"The Wasp and the Cricket" follows the Yellow-winged Wasp through her intense September mission: digging burrows in sun-warmed sand, hunting powerful Crickets, and stocking her underground cells before the cold arrives. Fabre captures the Wasp's calculated ferocity as she wrestles a Cricket into submission, neutralising its spiked legs and snapping jaws before delivering a precise, paralyzing sting to three nerve centres — keeping the prey alive but helpless as living food for her larvae. The story builds a portrait of instinct operating with almost surgical intelligence.
