Summer

Summer by Arthur Ransome unfolds as a gentle, sun-drenched account of a season lived fully outdoors — told by a narrator who calls himself the Ogre and shares his days with two children, the Imp and the Elf. From making cowslip balls and watching baby rabbits in tall grass, to climbing an oak tree to cheer on sheep-washing races, each episode brims with vivid, unhurried detail. The story builds toward the long golden stretch of haymaking, where the children bury their companion in hay and ride atop towering cartloads, before the cuckoo's fading call signals that summer is quietly slipping away.
