The Queen of Lanternland

The Queen of Lanternland is a free short fairy tale by Henry Beston about a wandering prince who stumbles into an underground kingdom lit only by lanterns. There he meets a beautiful queen — not celebrating her throne, but dreading it, as she has been forced to accept a marriage proposal from the fearsome wizard Dragondel under threat of ghostly destruction. With no army and no magic of his own, the prince disguises himself as a kitchen boy and forms an unlikely alliance with a grateful black cat to steal the talisman that keeps Dragondel's deadly whirlpool under control.
