The Tree of Swords

"The Tree of Swords" is a short fairy tale following a clever peasant youth who takes on a quest no knight or nobleman dared attempt — climbing a treacherous mountain of ice to retrieve a magical pear from a sword-filled tree guarded by a three-headed troll. A princess has been cursed into the form of a brindle cow, and only this bitter fruit can restore her. Armed with little more than nerve and a stolen belt of power, the peasant descends into the troll's underground lair where the real danger — and a surprising bargain — awaits.
