The Dummy That Lived

"The Dummy That Lived" is a short story in which Tanko-Mankie, a mischievous fairy ryl, breathes life into a wax mannequin displayed in a department store window. Newly alive and utterly inexperienced, the wax lady ventures into the city, attempting to imitate the people around her — ordering coffee she cannot drink, riding streetcars she cannot pay for, and puzzling every stranger she meets. Her innocent blunders grow increasingly perilous as the indifferent city closes in around her fragile, hollow form.
