The Christmas Masquerade

"The Christmas Masquerade" is a short fairy tale by Mary E. Wilkins Freeman about a mysterious shopkeeper whose enchanted costumes trap an entire city's children inside their characters on Christmas Eve. A mayor's daughter becomes a stubborn goose herder, princesses demand their castles, and a desperate town turns to wise women, castor oil, and even a soprano singer for help. Only a kind cherry man — and two surprising conditions — hold the key to breaking the spell before winter swallows the city whole.
