The Elephant’s Child | Animal Stories
This classic origin story follows a relentlessly curious Elephant's Child, who, unlike other elephants of the time, possessed only a small, bulgy nose. His constant questioning ("'satiable curtiosity") earns him spankings from his relatives until he dares to ask what the Crocodile eats for dinner and is directed to the Limpopo River. There, the Crocodile tricks him and grabs his nose, stretching it into a long trunk during a dramatic tug-of-war assisted by the Bi-Coloured-Python-Rock-Snake. Initially distressed, the Elephant's Child soon discovers the trunk's many practical advantages for eating, swatting flies, and self-defense, ultimately leading all elephants to acquire trunks from the Crocodile, thus ending the era of spankings for curiosity.
