The Old Man Who Made Trees Blossom | Stories About Trees

Upstream and Downstream are two neighbors with contrasting personalities. Downstream, a kind and generous man, adopts a magical dog that leads him to a pot of gold. Upstream, consumed by jealousy, borrows the dog but mistreats it, leading to misfortune and the dog's death. From the tree that grows on the dog's grave, Downstream creates a mortar that doubles rice, until Upstream destroys it. Downstream discovers the ashes can make trees blossom and impresses the king, while Upstream tries the same trick but ends up hurting the queen and being imprisoned. The story highlights the rewards of kindness and the consequences of greed.
