Jack Pumpkinhead and the sawhorse

Jack Pumpkinhead and the Sawhorse is a short story set in the magical land of Oz, where Ozma dispatches her most unusual companions to rescue two lost children deep in a gloomy forest. Jack — a figure of carved pumpkin and rough sticks — rides the golden-shod Sawhorse through tangled paths guided by Ozma's map. When they find the children bound to a tree by an outraged squirrel king, Jack's act of defiance comes at a terrible cost, leaving the Sawhorse to navigate the forest alone with a headless rescuer slumped across his saddle.
