The Glass Dog

"The Glass Dog" is a short story by L. Frank Baum in which a reclusive wizard commissions a glass-blower to craft a magical barking dog to guard his door. Seizing an opportunity, the cunning but homely glass-blower trades a miraculous cure-all to win the hand of the wealthy Miss Mydas — only to find beauty, ambition, and broken promises leading him somewhere far more complicated than happiness. Sharp and sardonic, the story follows each character's self-interest colliding with unexpected consequences.
