"The Cowardly Lion and the Hungry Tiger" is a short story set in the Emerald City of Oz, where two restless royal guardians grow tired of their decorative lives. Bored and overlooked, the Hungry Tiger vows to eat a fat baby and the Cowardly Lion plans to tear a stranger to pieces — just to prove they matter. But when their moment of menace actually arrives, something unexpected overtakes their darkest impulses, and neither beast quite manages to be the monster he imagined himself to be.
