The Happy Prince

Read "The Happy Prince" by Oscar Wilde online for free — a short story about a gilded statue who weeps over the suffering he can see from high above his city. When a migrating swallow stops to rest at his feet, the prince asks the bird to carry his ruby, then his sapphire eyes, then the gold from his body to those living in poverty below. Each gift costs the prince something precious, and each delay costs the swallow its chance of surviving winter — drawing both into an act of quiet, irreversible devotion.
