The Box Of Robbers

"The Box of Robbers" is a short story by L. Frank Baum in which young Martha, left alone in her family's Chicago home, discovers a heavy brass-studded chest in the attic — one her uncle sent from Italy and never returned to open. When curiosity leads her to unlock it, out crawl three self-proclaimed bandits in velvet jackets and sky-blue breeches, fiercely proud of their wicked reputations yet oddly easy to embarrass. As they set about robbing the house with theatrical flair, Martha must outwit them before the situation spirals beyond her control.
