Karen, a poor girl adopted by a wealthy woman, becomes obsessed with a pair of beautiful red shoes. Despite warnings that they are inappropriate for church, she wears them and is cursed to dance uncontrollably. The shoes force her to dance day and night, leading to exhaustion and regret. Desperate, she begs an executioner to chop off her feet, freeing her from the curse. Afterward, Karen lives a simple, virtuous life, renouncing vanity and embracing humility.
