A young mermaid princess longs for the human world and falls in love with a prince she rescues from a shipwreck. She makes a deal with a sea witch to trade her voice for legs, knowing she will suffer with every step and die if the prince marries another. Despite her devotion, the prince chooses to marry a princess he believes saved him before. Rather than kill the prince to save herself, the Little Mermaid sacrifices herself, but instead of turning into sea foam, she becomes a daughter of the air, with a chance to earn an immortal soul through good deeds.
