Why the Bananas Belong to the Monkey | Stories About Monkeys

"Why the Bananas Belong to the Monkey" is a Brazilian folktale explaining why monkeys believe they own all bananas. It tells of a little old woman who, after being cheated out of her fair share of bananas by a monkey, sets a trap using a wax image with tempting bananas. The monkey gets stuck, and when his fellow monkeys come to help, they make a pyramid to ask the sun for assistance. The sun melts the wax, freeing the monkey. The old woman, discouraged, leaves, abandoning the banana garden to the monkeys, who have since believed they own all bananas. The story illustrates themes of trickery, fairness, and the origin of beliefs.
